Mountain Youth Explorer Program
for 9-12 year olds

Workshop Hours: 8:00am-3:30pm

Friday All Ages Workshops, $55


After Care Hours: 3:30-6:00pm

A fun filled program for families who need expanded hours.
(preregistration is required at least 48 hours in advance)
Cost: $20/day drop in rate and $15/day with a set summer schedule.
Make a commitment of 2 days per week for the entire summer and receive 1/2 price After care and 3 days per week or more for the entire summer receive FREE aftercare!

 

Ride on our shuttle service!
Wild Bear provides a shuttle service from Boulder to its Nederland based programs. This service utilizes the RTD bus system to promote the use of alternative transportation. Instructors interact with the children at all times and we maintain an 8:1 ratio. Children are picked up at the bus stop at the Watershed School Parking Lot and dropped off at the bus stop near the Eben G. Fine park at the mouth of Boulder Canyon.
Cost: $7/day per child

What is the Mountain Explorer Camp?

Two Day Workshops for nine to twelve year olds Venture out into the wilderness to experience the natural world with the experts. Scientists and professional artists will engage youth in ind epth studies of the backyard. These young scientists will gain an amazing experience in the outdoors as well as a greater scientific knowledge of the ecological systems in which we live.

Mountain Youth Explorers

Field Photography Go out into the field to learn how to capture the beauty of nature with your camera. Learn about all of the elements of photography and create your own photo field journal to take home. Bring your own digital camera! M/W June 9 & 11

Natural Dyes Explore dyes that are produced by the natural world: dyes made out of insects and plants! Create colorful organic flags to express your thoughts! T/Th June 10 & 12

Painting at the Lake Join Anne Snow and Phyllis Wright, two outstanding painters as we try our hand at painting Mud Lake and the surrounding peaks. Create your own painting journal and learn techniques from these local talented senior artists! M/W June 16 & 18

Mountain Research Let's venture up to the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station and explore the outdoors through the eyes of high alpine scientists. Let's find out what they are doing up there to understand how the earth is changing. T/Th June 17 & 19

Weave Your Way Learn how to create cordage and weave mats with the natural fibers of cattail, bulrush, willow and yucca. Spend an afternoon at Log Lagos pond learning the way of the willow basket.M/W June 23 & 25

Primitive Pathways How did primitive peoples survive? Learn the secrets of animal tracking, shelter-building, fire-making, and living in harmony with the natural environment. T/Th June 24 & 26

Search and Rescue What happens when outdoor adventure goes wrong? Meet Koert the rescue dog for a live demonstration of air-scent trailing, hear his stories of avalanche rescues, and learn techniques for staying safe while enjoying the backcountry. M/W June 30 & July 2

Wilderness Survival Create your own wilderness survival kit and learn from the experts! Learn how to prevent problems when you head to the woods. What shall you pack? What about water? What plants shall we eat if necessary? T/Th July 1 & 3

Aquatic Invertebrates Grab your net, boots, and journal-to locate the macroinvertebrates in the local water. We will search for lifecycles and tie flies to replicate our discoveries! M/W July 7 & 9

Fly Fishing Discover the local "secret holes" and try your hand at fly fishing, with the help of experienced guides! Understand the aquatic life cycles, learn to tie flies, and practice catch and release with barbless hooks. T/Th July 15 & 17

Field Entomology Meet the Entomologists and try out your own entomological studies. Survey with LIVE traps, net sweeping and pitfall traps. Collect data and understand the importance of insects in our study of climate change. T/Th July 8 & 10

Sculptures Have you ever seen the sculpture on Wild Bear's property at Mud Lake? Join this group to work with professional sculptors to create another interpretation of the land. Artistically express yourself with different sculpting mediums. M/W July 14 & 16

Environmental Cartooning Join local cartoonist, George Blevins and make a statement without saying a word! George will train us to find humor in the natural world and to express our ideas through cartoons. Create your own cartoon book to take home! M/W July 21 & 23

Energy Alternatives Learn how sun, wind, water and even corn are being used to power our planet! We will meet the experts and create our own wind and sun-powered mechanisms to test outdoors. T/Th July 22 & 24

Disc Ecology Join Reba Mitchell and try your hand at Frisbee Golf while you discover the ecology of the area. Can you hit all of the points AND answer the quiz? Create your own course on Wild Bear's property at Mud Lake. M/W July 28 & 30

Mountain Expeditions Enjoy the massive mountains and explore the montane, subalpine and alpine tundra as we head to the trails. Discover the plants that grow from 8,000 to 10,000 feet, walk on a snowdrift, and look for watermelon snow! T/Th July 29 & 31

Eco-Mountain Biking Grab your mountain bike and ride the Mud Lake trails with Reba Mitchell, Wild Bear's Mountain Bike Expert! Become a leave-no-trace biker, learn riding techniques and basic bike maintenance. Beginner riders encouraged! M/W August 4 & 6

Botanical Journaling Join professional journal maker Susie Mottashed for this special workshop to explore the botanical world in your backyard. Gain an understanding of plant classification and write a floral key for Mud Lake Open Space. T/Th August 5 & 7
